The surviving members of Led Zeppelin are reuniting for one upcoming December performance in London. Milwaukee fans of their music who won't make it there got a chance to hear the music of Led Zeppelin last Friday night at the Riverside Theater. This tribute band wasn't the real thing, of course, but it was a good night of Zeppelin songs. The sold-out crowd of baby boomers and younger fans loved it.
The concept did not attempt to be an imitation of Zeppelin. These were not exact copies of original recordings, but recognizable and reasonable facsimiles. Though there were simple lighting effects, there were none of the elaborate excesses of the legendary tours of the 1970s. The focus was on the music. Led Zeppelin's songs defy sentiment. They do not naturally evoke misty nostalgia or invite sing-along. The concert felt less like reliving youth than considering how fresh this music still sounds. For the most part, Randy Jackson filled the large shoes of Robert Plant admirably. Jackson's voice is similar to Plant's, a high rock tenor, heading often into an edgy falsetto mix.
